Chesham, UK — Resolve Optics Ltd. is supplying a North American camera manufacturer with small batches of a custom UV zoom lens enabling safe remote viewing of nuclear fuel assemblies through 10 metres of water.
To meet the challenges of this difficult application – the UV zoom lens was designed to optimally operate from 10 to 55 ºC.
Miniature motors were incorporated to allow accurate remote setting of both zoom and focus functions. A filter slide was incorporated in the design enabling the lens to be switched between UV (270 to 350 nm) and visible (400 to 700 nm) without the need to refocus the lens.
Using a telescopic focus the lens was able to image objects from 13 metres to infinity with optical correction for 10 metres of water. The lens achieved high image resolution with low distortion throughout the zoom range without refocusing (image tracking).
Top-siding adjustment was provided on the lens so that the motor cables could be conveniently positioned.
A unique lockable C-mount was incorporated into the design to ensure that the lens would not come loose during operation.

Mahr Federal Introduces The MarSurf® UD 130
MarSurf UD 130
PROVIDENCE, RI, USA – Mahr Federal has introduced a new “entry level” surface finish and contour measuring system that can generate both surface and contour measurements in a single pass.
The MarSurf® UD 130 replaces the MarSurf UD 120 and offers improved features, including nanometer range measurements, high measuring and positioning speeds, a biomimetic probe design with improved rigidity and higher dynamics, and automatic probe arm recognition.
“We call the MarSurf UD 130 an “entry level” system because it is a more economical version of our high-end MarSurf LD 130,” said Kevin Akin, Product Manager – Form and Surface Metrology.
“It’s designed for applications in industries such as automotive or bearings that require high resolution, but which may not have the very high tolerance requirements of some optical or aerospace applications.”
Tring, UK — Specialised Imaging reports on customer research demonstrates the utility of a SIL gated image intensifier system in improving the sensitivity, gating time and UV spectral response of a Phantom V high-speed video camera looking at fuel combustion in a test cell.
In lean-burn internal combustion engines the air:fuel ratio may be as lean as 65:1 (by mass) compared to the standard engine combustion ratio c. 15:1.
The excess of air in a lean-burn engine combusts more of the fuel, emits fewer hydrocarbons and can also be used to reduce losses caused by other engine power management systems such as throttling losses.

Laser based technology developed by Sparklike Ltd
Sparklike Gasglass Laser
Helsinki, Finland — The new technology applies modulated laser beam into the Insulating Glass, and by measuring the reflection, intensity and harmonic changes in signal it can determine the oxygen content inside the cavity.
Oxygen concentration can be then converted into insulation gas percentage. The most commonly used gases are argon and krypton.
Having gas content information from every piece of the unit produced can be used in efficient quality assurance of the production line.
The laser-based system is possible to be installed on-line and connected to the production control software. Continue reading

Provides a colour image as natural as possible in highly radioactive environments
Model 346 Radiation-hard, Non-browning color imaging lens
Chesham, UK — The new Model 346 non-browning lens from Resolve Optics Ltd. has been designed to operate with colour sensors in areas subject to ionizing radiation.
Only in recent years have colour CMOS sensors been developed that can withstand the effects of radioactivity to any level that could be used in the inspection of radioactive sites.
These sensors are still not as radiation-hard as a tube camera but they can now withstand enough radiation to enable them to be used in areas of low and mid-range radiation levels.
However for any camera lens to survive even quite low levels of radiation, without degradation, they should be produced from non-browning cerium-doped glass. Continue reading
